Is the DCAT administered by a computer?

No, a DriveABLE certified assessor guides the patient through the tasks. Practice is given to ensure the patient understands what they are to do on each task.

Doesn’t the computer intimidate older patients?

No. The tasks are computer presented but all the patient has to do is touch the screen or push a button to respond. It is no more difficult than touching an X drawn on a piece of paper. Computer presentation enables precision measurement, objectivity, and automated scoring.

How long does the DCAT take?

The DCAT takes about 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the patient’s degree of impairment.

How long does it take to get the assessment results?

The test performance can be scored immediately over an Internet connection, with immediate generation of results. Data sent over the internet are encrypted and HIPPA (US) and PIA (CANADA) compliant.

Who can administer the DCAT?

Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech Therapists, Nurses, Social Workers, OT Assistants, Psychometrists and other qualified professionals who are DriveABLE trained and certified.

Can patients be reassessed?

Yes, the ability to reassess allows the healthcare professional to closely monitor the patient’s progress in a treatment program or monitor decline where there is a progressive illness.

Who can be assessed using DCAT?

Drivers of all ages who have cognitive decline due to medical conditions or medications or due to natural decline. For a description of such conditions see our red flag list.

Is the Mini Mental State Exam an accurate assessment of driving ability?

No. Correlation statistics showed the MMSE accounted for less than 9% of driving performance. At a score of 24 (the Canadian standard) the MMSE identified only about 50% of unsafe drivers and incorrectly identified about 20% of safe drivers as unsafe

What are the forms of reimbursement for assessments?

Cost for assessment can vary in different provinces/states. In some areas, fees are assumed by patients. In the USA, CPT codes are applicable for billing the procedure. Please contact your local DriveABLE™ provider for further information here.

Are physicians who report unsafe drivers liable?

No. Physicians who do not report unsafe drivers can be held liable
